It’s not always easy to be cheerful in the morning, but there are a few little things you can do to give yourself a better chance of starting the day happy. If you start the day in a good mood, the rest of it is more likely to be pleasant and productive, so try following some of these tips.
Eating a good, healthy breakfast is one of the best ways to start the day right. A nutritious mix of complex carbohydrates will give you a great energy boost and increase serotonin in the brain, making you feel more cheerful and ready to face the day. Try a high-fibre cereal with milk, eggs and toast, or fruit and low fat yogurt.
Music can have a big impact on your mood, so brighten your morning by playing your favourite songs – ones which put a smile on your face or remind you of happy memories. Typically, upbeat songs with a fast pace and a predictable melody are the best mood boosters.
Physical activity is always good for boosting your mood, so doing it in the morning can really help you start your day off on the right note. When you exercise, your body releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins, putting you in a more cheerful mood. Even something as simple as a short run can be a very effective morning mood booster.
Doing a little exercise may take you outside but if not, it can be helpful to simply sit in your garden for a little while. Findings from various studies suggest that being outdoors is great for your mood, making you feel happier and more relaxed.
What you wear may not always seem important, but when you’re satisfied with what you’re wearing you feel more confident, which makes you feel happier. Wear clothes that are comfortable and make you feel good.
Positive thoughts don’t always come easily – especially first thing in the morning – but making a conscious effort to push aside negative thoughts about the day and focus on good things will help to improve your mood. Instead of dwelling on stressful tasks or chores you need to do, take a little time to appreciate the pleasant weather or upcoming plans you have with family and friends. If you start the day on a positive note, it has a better chance of continuing in the same vein.
Whether you’re a morning person or not, incorporating some of these tips into your morning routine can do great things for your mood and your day in general. Every day has the potential to be a happy and productive one, so make an effort to start each one the right way!
