There’s a lot of preparation to do and a lot of things that can go wrong, and trying to keep on top of everything makes many people anxious. While you may not be able to completely eliminate stress, you can certainly reduce it by taking into account some useful tips.

Book Early
Making your holiday plans early gives you plenty of time to get all of your pre-travel errands done. It will also give you a good pick of dates, so you can avoid travelling on the busiest dates and find the cheapest deals.

Get Enough Sleep
Pre-travel errands and early or late flight times often deprive travellers of a fair amount of sleep. This is best avoided because not getting enough sleep is sure to make you irritable and more prone to stress, as well as making jet lag worse. Being well-prepared will allow you to maintain a healthy sleep pattern in the days leading up to your holiday. If you need to sleep on your flight, try taking eye masks, ear plugs and travel cushions with you – whatever will help you to doze off.

Leave Work at Home
A survey by found that one in four people plan to work while on holiday, which is certainly a way to take stress with you on your travels. For a stress-free trip, you should set clear boundaries between work time and holiday time. Try to be well-organised at work in the weeks leading up to your trip so you can feel more comfortable leaving those duties behind for a week or two. If you absolutely must work while away, try to limit that work time to one or two hours a day so that it doesn’t creep into every aspect of your leisure time.

Plan for the Worst
There are many things that can go wrong that are out of your control, so be ready for them all. Assume the airport will be crowded and full of long queues, and arrive there early. Assume your suitcase may get lost or delayed, and pack anything particularly valuable or essential in your hand luggage. Be prepared for bad weather, harassed staff and unexpected illness so you can mentally plan how to deal with these stressors.

Travel As Light As You Can
Try to avoid over-packing. If you take only the things you need, it will be easier to keep track of everything and you’re less likely to be charged extra at the airport for baggage which is over the weight limit. Packing light will also leave room for you to bring home any souvenirs you accumulate at your destination.

Pack Snacks
People tend to get more anxious or bad-tempered when they’re hungry, so make sure you have enough food with you to keep hunger at bay during your journey. A bad mood caused by lack of food will only exacerbate any stress caused by other aspects of travelling.

Give Yourself Enough Time
Rushing to the airport at the last minute causes a lot of stress. Make sure you’ve packed as much as you can before the day you’re leaving so you can focus on checking over everything on the day. Set off earlier than you think you should to account for potential traffic jams, late taxis, problems parking and long security queues. Having adequate time to deal with unexpected delays will save you a lot of anxiety.

When it comes to travelling, the key to keeping stress levels low is good planning and time-management. Start your preparations early and be ready to tackle any potential problems. Good organisation will allow you to relish your time off and make the most of your holiday.
