Who Needs The Gym For Fitness?

We all need to look after our health and fitness, particularly as we get older. Remember when you were at school and P.E or gym was compulsory several times a week? Were you one of the ones that loved or hated it? Unfortunately, I fell into the latter group but once I left school and got out into the big wide world, I gradually began to realise why the school teachers had made us work out.

Life changes you

Once you begin sitting at a desk every day of your life or driving everywhere in the car, it doesn’t take long for the stiffness to creep in and the pounds to start piling on ever so slowly. But does this mean you have to sign up at your local gym? If you have ever made use of a personal trainer, at the gym or elsewhere, you will know that the results do show but only once you have paid out a lot of money and worked yourself into a lather.
So are there other ways to get and keep fit without spending a fortune or having to learn how to use complex and sometimes intimidating equipment, displaying your out-of-shape form in front of everyone else?

Check out apps on your mobile

There are some great mobile apps with instructional videos that you can follow while working out; a little like having your own personal trainer in your pocket. There are so many apps available to suit all levels of fitness and that you can fit in with your work and home routine at a time to suit you.

Try googling some keep fit ideas

Want to try Yoga or Pilates or something a little gentler? Again, the internet is full of workouts using these techniques that are suitable for complete beginners or even those of us who have tried the method before. You can do as much or as little as you like and don’t have to worry about keeping up with others in the group.

Get YouTube fit

Most people love and use YouTube on a regular basis. The great thing about it is that you can find a YouTuber and a video that you identify with and use them as your virtual mentor. If you struggle at any time or need to stop and take a breather, simply pause and begin again later. You can forget about rushing home from work, changing into your gym wear and joining a class overflowing with lots of other sweaty bodies; whether you want to dance yourself fit or even try the Zumba, YouTube will have it.

Get a fitness buddy

Maybe you want to go jogging but feel conspicuous or a little silly running around the block with your earphones plugged in and your trainers on? Ask friends if they want to run with you; not only will you be far more motivated but by chatting as you jog, time will pass much more quickly.  Additionally, safety will be enhanced if you go to quiet or remote areas.


So, whether you are exercising with the celebs in your lounge via Google or making up a group of Yoga buddies in your lounge, you can keep fit, active and supple without needing to visit the gym.

If all else fails, as Dr Chris says time & time again, just go for a walk! Try it and see for yourself!
