If you’re sure that you want to have cosmetic surgery and you’ve weighed up all the risks involved, then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with booking your treatment.
However, before doing it, it’s important to ask yourself why you want to. If you’re suffering from feelings of low self-esteem and self-confidence, there could be a root cause to these emotions that no amount of cosmetic surgery will be able to cure.
If you feel depressed about the way you look, you’re certainly not alone. According to a survey conducted by REAL magazine, only 3% of women were completely happy with the way they looked. Additionally, 67% reported that they would strongly consider cosmetic surgery in the future.
Here are some techniques you can try to boost your confidence and take pride in your body as it is, without surgical modification.
Focus on the positives
When you next look in the mirror, instead of focusing on the area of your body that you don’t like, study the parts that you’re happy with. You might have wonderfully long legs, a slim waist or an elegant neck. In fact, you may have a lot of beautiful features that other people look upon with envy! It’s only through developing awareness of your best features that you can start to appreciate your appearance.
See your body as an ally, not an enemy
Your body and you have been through a lot together. It’s remained healthy (for the most part) over the years, it’s kept you going and so far, it’s served you well. See it as a friend, not something to be loathed. Accept its flaws, and recognise all that it has going for it.
Ask friends and family
Explain to your loved ones that you’re considering cosmetic surgery, but that you’d like them to help you make your final decision. Ask them to create a list of all the things they think are most wonderful and beautiful about you. Afterwards, read through the list and start to see yourself through the eyes of others. It’s likely you’ll find it a highly revealing, encouraging process!
Take control
If you’re unhappy with any aspect of your body, remember that there are steps you can take to make yourself feel better. You can improve your levels of fitness by getting active. You can look after your body by eating the right foods, by stopping smoking and by drinking less. There are many positive changes you can incorporate into your life to help boost your mood and raise self-confidence.
Accept that nobody is perfect
There isn’t a single human on this planet who is 100% perfect and who is completely happy with their appearance. That friend of yours with the wonderful figure? She may be deeply unhappy with the size of her nose. The other friend with fantastic breasts? She’s insecure about her weight. Learn to accept that it’s okay to not be completely perfect. In fact, that’s what makes you uniquely you!
